A neck enhancement or neck lift is an effective procedure for patients who have sagging neck skin due to aging. Often times this procedure is an effective alternative to having a facelift.
Age changes are often foreseen in the neck. As we age fat tends to disappear in the upper cheeks and appear under the chin and jaw line. In a younger patient or one with good elastic skin, liposuction alone may give a dramatic improvement, with only a tiny incision. Through a slightly larger incision under the chin, visible muscle cords can be addressed and more neck fat removed. If however, there is significant skin aging and laxity, skin lifting or tightening must be accomplished to get the desired contour improvement at the chin-neck angle and this requires longer skin incisions, essentially a face-neck lift.
In rare occasions, direct skin excision is done under the chin. This is usually reserved for older patients because of the risk of poor scars.
Both male and female patients have this procedure performed. However, male patients especially like it because scars are very well hidden and not visible around the ears (men typically do not conceal that area with long hair). Scarring is minimal with a neck lift and scars tend to blend in with the natural creases of the skin.
Many patients find that a facelift in conjunction with a neck lift also offers the most optimal results.
